The VAR (Video Assistant Referee) assists the on-field officials within a soccer match.
VAR can usually only intervene in a number of match changing situations. However, this can vary by tournament. These situations include:
-
Goals
-
Penalties
-
Red Cards
-
Mistaken Identity
-
Corners (World Cup only)
-
Second Yellow Cards (World Cup only)
For a decision to be overturned after a VAR intervention, the on-field referee must decide that a clear and obvious error has been made within the above situations.
Impacts on bet settlement
VAR can affect bet settlement by:
Bet Adjustments
If you place a bet during a VAR check, and the subsequent VAR decision has a direct effect on the bet you have just placed, that bet will be subject to potential revised odds, or voids. Any bets that were settled before the VAR intervention will also be adjusted accordingly based on the final decision made on the pitch.
Cash Out availability
During a VAR intervention, Cash Out may be suspended while the decision is being confirmed.
The time a market is settled
For settlement purposes, the time of the incident on the field of play took placed will be used, even if a VAR intervention occurs. This is explained further below.
For example, a Manchester United player commits a foul in the box against a Leeds United player at 09:30, but the game goes on. Then, at 10:00, the VAR steps in, which shows within Match Live.
Once the decision has been checked and the no-penalty decision has been overturned, an alert will be displayed on-screen.
Settlement will be based on the time the original foul occurred rather than the time it is awarded following VAR.
